12 Things That Schools Should Teach Us

Since the first day of school, we learn so many primary subjects which include maths, science, languages, and others. We also learn about numerous principles of life such as discipline, honesty, hard work, etc. These are a few fundamentals that one must get a grip over.

But not everything worth knowing is chalked up on blackboards. There are some things that we learn at some points in our lifetimes, but in my opinion, should be part of the school curriculums.

Given below are 12 life skills that ought to be taught at school since they determine your success.

1. Socializing skills

In recent times, teens and young adults have become more dependent on their phones for communication. And why not? Talking through text messages or with your close friends in person is a lot easier than talking to a random person who barely knows your first name.

But in reality, good socializing and communicating skills can help you make connections and may even help you land your first job.

One must learn how to speak respectfully to others, how to strike up conversations with other people, and good body language while communicating.

2. How to manage relationships

One thing that creates a prominent impact on your life is your relationships. Relationships matter! Be it with your parents, your friends, your spouse, and your boss too. Your key relationships can stifle you or encourage you, depending on who you spend time with.

Even though relationships are important, it is hard to manage them. Relationships can be hell or heaven. This is why it is essential to choose the right people to spend time with and make healthy relationships. Teaching the importance of healthy relationships and how to maintain them is an important concept that must be taught at schools.

3. How to handle finances

Learning how to handle personal finances is something I wish could be taught to me in high school. Schools must teach students how to budget, how compound interest works, how to save money, how to invest, how credit cards work, how to avoid debt, how insurance works, how to make large payments, how taxes work, and an infinite number of other concepts.

4. How does the stock market work

Knowing how the stock market works can make a teen financially intelligent. It helps them build financial goals and save for future expenses. Investing is for kids too - and it's never too early to learn. Investing early in life practically guarantees financial freedom later in life. Starting young can increase your chance and amount of success.

5. The art of negotiation

Negotiating is an important concept that must be taught at schools because it can practically be very beneficial in the future. Schools must educate students about how to negotiate because once you enter the big, bad world of adulthood, negotiation plays a very important role in helping you get out of some seriously tricky situations. Negotiation skills are generally advantageous in the world of business.

6. Self-defense

This is not nice to think about, but the world is filled with highly dangerous people. And what's even more awful to think about is that you might encounter some of these people in your lifetime. To stay safe, it is vital to learn how to defend yourself.

Self-defense is an integral part of life. Not only can you protect yourself from evil but it also helps boost your morale, keeps you elated, and helps you lead a highly successful and confident life.

7. Survival skills

Teens can be taught about the following survival skills at school - not panicking in an arduous or overwhelming situation, being aware, using first aid, how to handle a firearm, how to get help, and many more.

Teaching survival skills to teens would imbue them with confidence and builds resilience.

8. Spotting scams

Schools don't tend to teach children about how to spot the signs of a swindler and getting fleeced at least once is currently the only way to learn about the incredible amount of scams. Teaching students about how to spot a scam will take them a long way in life.

9. Critical thinking and problem solving

Critical thinking means being able to analyze the way you think. It improves students' flexibility and learning skills and makes education less passive and more interactive. It also helps students to better express their ideas.

Critical thinking and problem-solving make kids more adaptable to changes. They also foster independence. In the end, it is a skill for life and not just for learning.

10. Mental Health

Mental health awareness is a must in the curriculums of school because emotional well-being is as important as physical well-being. Good mental health can lead a human being to become more prosperous and complete. It also helps students achieve better academically.

11. Cooking

Schools must teach students how to cook since it helps them make better food choices and make them smarter in meal planning. Cooking with children in schools promotes a lifetime skill of healthy cooking starting at a young age. Cooking is an important life skill and changes the student's mindset.

12. Parenting

Teens must be taught about parenting since this helps them learn about empathy and responsibility. These skills extend far beyond raising children. Students who have to help care for their siblings also benefit from the same. Teaching parenting in high schools has several other benefits as well.

In my opinion, all these skills are worth learning and ought to be taught at schools. Hopefully, these 12 things school doesn't teach you helped you understand what you should learn on your own. Even if this means going out of the way to learn them.
